On a clear day the view from Eagle Mountain in Milton reveals the Champlain Islands with Adirondack peaks beyond, all telling the story of the Lake. Eagle Mountain also offers a story of family pioneering. "I came to Vermont when I was 6 weeks old," says John Hoyt, who owned the land with wife Margaret Hoyt. "My parents camped in tents along the shores." John’s father purchased the mountain in 1922. He persevered through the Great Depression with farming and maple sugaring, the latter creating a network of trails that still exist today. John and his wife conserved Eagle Mountain in 1995 by donating the land to the Lake Champlain Land Trust. Boasting a high peak on Lake Champlain, Eagle Mountain is one of a few easily accessible mountain trail areas in Chittenden County. Eagle Mountain is one of 40 properties saved by the Lake Champlain Land Trust. Over the past 25 years the Land Trust has preserved thousands of acres and miles of shoreline on Lake Champlain For information on becoming a member visit our website www.LCLT.org! |
