This picture was taken from Fort Tichonderoga looking south down the lake. To the right one would see the opening to the La Chute River, the short two-mile, cascade-filled river that drains Lake George into Lake Champlain, dropping 200 feet in elevation in the process. The name Ticonderoga, “a land between two great waters,” and was given to this area by Native Americans who inhabited and traveled here thousands of years before Europeans arrived.
